10 tips to improve your mental health
Your mental health is important every day, so there’s no better time to learn some tips that can help you take care of yourself! You can take steps as big or as small as you are ready for, and here are some great ideas below to start!
1. Try a relaxing activity!
If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, schedule some time to try a few relaxing activities such as breathing exercises, muscle relaxation techniques, or even meditation! There are many apps now that focus on helping you relax and unwind through breathing and meditating, or even try going for a walk, reading a book, or anything else that helps you clear your mind!
2. Get plenty of sleep!
Sleep is super important when it comes to your mental health! Try to stick to a sleep schedule, and make sure that you are getting enough sleep each night to be fully rested and ready for the next day. Try to reduce phone or computer use before bed so you can get to sleep faster and easier.
3. Connect with family and friends.
Family and friends can be a great source of comfort and motivation in life, plus they can provide great emotional support! Be sure to stay connected with them and don’t forget to check in when you need help or support.
4. Get exercise!
Getting exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym every day, but rather just getting moving and doing something you like to do! This could be going for a walk at your favorite park, going for a bike ride, or even doing yoga. Anything that gets you moving will help you improve your mood!
5. Be nice to yourself!
When your mental health is not in the right spot, it’s very easy to be hard on yourself. Try to be compassionate towards yourself and give yourself a break. Even try doing something nice for someone else, and in return it will help you feel good about yourself!
6. Eat healthy.
Make sure you are keeping track of your diet and that you are eating the fruits and vegetables you need. Eating healthy can help boost your mood and help you feel better about the choices you make!
7. Start a journal.
Keeping track of your thoughts is a great way to keep tabs on your own mental health, even if it is just writing a paragraph a night! If you can get your thoughts out on paper, it can help you unwind and get some things off your chest.
8. Set goals and priorities!
Working towards something can be very rewarding and it helps to be able to track your progress! Keep track of all the great things you have been able to accomplish rather than the things you have not been able to just yet.
9. Focus on positivity!
Notice when you are having negative thoughts and try to combat that with positive thinking! Start your day with some positive affirmations and replace those “I can’t” thoughts with some “I can” thoughts! You can find some of those on our social media pages at @buckscountyhoym!
10. Know when to get help!
If you need help, know that it’s okay to ask! There are so many incredible resources available with so many people who truly care about you! There is always someone to talk to when you call or text 9-8-8, plus there are local lines available as well. You can find all of these numbers on the homepage of our website at holdonyoumatter.com, and you can call them anytime you need help.
